Application Consulting The Graduate School Countdown
It's the final countdown.... All of the country (and frankly, world), aspiring graduate students are cranking out their applications, many of which are due in the coming weeks! Many graduate schools have rolling deadlines, which begin in the end of Decemebr. Some deadlines happen later, but starting early is a good thing; the earlier your application is received, the earlier it will be reviewed, and the sooner youââ¬â¢ll know about admission! So, if any of these statements rings true to you, then this post might prove useful to you. ââ¬Å"I want to start graduate school in the fall of 2014.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not sure how to manage all the pieces of my graduate school application.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m stuck writing my personal statement for graduate school.â⬠ââ¬Å"I want to study X, but Iââ¬â¢m not sure which schools to apply to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m trying to study for the GRE and prep my applications all at once. Eek!â⬠The bottom line is that graduate school applications are tough because they ask you to do several things at once: The personal statement asks you to reflect on the why of graduate school: Unless your passion or career path is totally clear-cut, personal statements to grad school often conjure up more existential questions about your future path, and the uncertainties of doing the right thing for your career. Itââ¬â¢s not easy to sum up your life story in a succinct way that is also compelling! The GRE test brings back the anxieties of high school test prep and worse many of us havenââ¬â¢t done the kind of math tested since! Most people donââ¬â¢t like standardized testing, and most of the content tested has no bearing on your future degree, so it feels rather frustrating to prepare for this merciless exam. The graduate school application involves many moving pieces: your undergraduate transcript, a resume, a personal statement, recommendations, (sometimes writing samples and/or GRE subject tests). Getting the application together is a project in of itself that tests your organization skills; this aspect of the process alone can be overwhelming. You might be asking yourself: Ok, so whatââ¬â¢s the good news? Youââ¬â¢re making this sound even worse that I thought it was! Hereââ¬â¢s the upside: you can easily stay on top of it all if you compartmentalize the process and plan in advance. Run through these questions in your head to start breaking up the application components to build out your timeline: What are the most time-consuming aspects of the application? The personal statement The resume GRE GRE Subject test (dependent on the degree) Writing Samples (dependent on the degree) Applying for financial aid What application components can be dispatched or quickly resolved? Requesting your transcript Soliciting letters of recommendation The application portal With your complete list of requirements in front you, you'll have a better sense of the effort required and you can start mapping your process onto specific calendar dates. For the sake of this exercise, letââ¬â¢s say your application deadline is in 6 weeks, on Monday, January 13th: Remember to do the easy stuff first, and start planning the longer-term projects in advance. Set yourself very clear deadlines and stick to them: Week 1 Request your transcripts in paper and PDF form. Done! Reach out to your recommenders: Formally request a recommendation and provide a clear timeline/guideline for the recommendation. Set a false deadline thatââ¬â¢s earlier than the actual thing (December 20th, for example). Hereââ¬â¢s a post on selecting and requesting your recs: Done! Review your resume: Edit your resume to reflect your recent experiences, then share it with a trusted peer or family member to receive their feedback. Are you applying for financial aid? If so, figure out the requirements. If you havenââ¬â¢t already taken the GRE, register for a test date as soon as you feel ready (you can do this up to 1 day before the application deadline). Keep studying! Whatââ¬â¢s left? Finishing your resume The personal statement (and/or writing samples) The GRE (and/or GRE subject test) The application portal (work history, personal data, etc.) Financial Aid application Week 2 Finalize your resume. Done! Fill out the easy parts of the application portal (personal data, educational history, income information, etc.). Done! Keep studying for the GRE. Complete the financial aid application requirements. Done! Week 4 Make this week all about the GRE. Do nothing on your application but study for the exam. Week 5 Outline and draft your personal statement. Work with a consultant or trusted editor; feedback on your writing is crucial! Check in with your recommenders if you havenââ¬â¢t yet received your letters of rec. Take the GRE already! Done! Week 6 Finalize your personal statement. Review and tweak all application components. Think about the application as a package, and check for cohesion. Voila! Itââ¬â¢s certainly a fair amount of work, but totally manageable if you break it up. Youââ¬â¢ll thank yourself later if you put in the time to plot out your workflow in advance. If the process still seems unwieldy, or if your timeline is even more abbreviated, many students find it helpful and reassuring to work with an outside consultant on all aspects of the process, or even just the writing. Nostra Aetate represents the historical period it was written in because the document would effectively bind the wounds of centuries of Christian Anti-Semitism and reexamine the churches relationship with the Jewish people (Traditions, p. 436). With the catastrophic genocide of Jews in the Holocaust, followed by the birth of the first Jewish state of Israel, the church would have to reassess its relationship with Judaism. The document connects Christianity to its Jewish roots and indicates that the two faiths share a common origin through Abraham. The declaration also uses Paulââ¬â¢s letters to the Romans as a New Testament source, where Paul gives reverence to the Jewish faith. The document further clarifies that the early history of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦By identifying the special bond between Christians and Jews through the Hebrew Scriptures, the church is trying to bind the wounds of anti-Semitism that had existed in the church for centuries. Nostra Aetate would al so use the Apostle Paulââ¬â¢s letters to the Romans as a New Testament passage where he gives reverence to Judaism. Paul praises ââ¬Å"the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praisedâ⬠(Romans 9:4-5). ââ¬Å"The Jews viewed Godââ¬â¢s choosing of Israel in the Old Testament as being like an adoptionâ⬠(Life Application Study Bible, p. 2044). ââ¬Å"They were undeserving and yet God adopted them and granted them status of calling them children of Godâ⬠(Life Application Study Bible, p. 2044). These verses states that the covenant made between Israel and God has never been revoked even though some of them rejected the Jewish Messiah. This reinforces the churches idea that Jews should not be cursed and they are the people of God. Usin g this New Testament passage the church is repairing the wounds of centuries of Christian prejudice towards Jews. The Project aims on helping inmates maintain their communication with their families, monitor the issues and problems of women, and help them to be a productive citizen of the society. The project has accomplished publishing a report about the issues faced by women, distributing a manual that analyzes the results of imprisonment of women and is planning to develop more programs as well ("Women in Prison Project", 2007). Today, the prison population of women has grown drastically. Women are the fastest growing segment of prisoners. In California alone, the number of women who are housed in correctional facilities has grown by 850% between 1980 and 1999. (Ogden, 61) This means that their needs cannot be ignored any longer. The most important change that must be made is to remove the prison-industrial complex. This is a system wherein prisons are not merely facilities devoted to correctional causes or purposes. Instead, prisons are used as a source of cheap labor. The prisoners serve as laborers and commercial establishments take advantage of prisoners because it will greatly lower their production costs. This is truly a sad state of correctional facilities in the country. Prisoners become raw materials as companies who build the facilities generate more profit as more prisoners are sent to jail. (Ogden, 63) Even the government is part of this system since the more people they send to jail, the more facilities they need to build. In turn, this creates more jobs. (Smith) The prison-industrial complex defeats the primary purpose of the prison. Instead of providing inmates with opportunities to grow, improve themselves, and realize and learn from their mistakes, this system plunges them to what seems like modern day slavery. (Smith, 106) Women in prisons today are mostly underprivileged. Most of them are either African-Americans or Native Americans. White women make up only a small portion of their population. Moreover, most women in prison come from the lower socio-economic classes. Such statistics point to the prevailing fact that the prison system is greatly biased against those from lower classes. Intersectionality, which refers to the combination of two or more forms of discrimination greatly affects women in the prison system. Since women of color make up majority of women inmates, they experience harsher treatment because of two primary factors, their color or race and their gender. Discrimination based on color combined with discrimination based on gender makes prison life all the more harder for women. For instance, Ogden wrote of how she all her earning from working while in prison was not enough to pay for her necessities as a woman such as those she needs for personal care. Pregnant inmates also are not given the proper care and attention as what Smith wrote. This is because prisons are primarily male-centered institutions. This means that the prison facilities cater to men only. Prison guards are mostly male even in facilities that are meant for women. This increases the chance of abuse and harassment for the inmates. Due to the increasing number of women being sent to prison, there is a need to build facilities that better suit the needs of women inmates. Personal care supplies should be made available to inmates for these are necessities not mere luxuries. Also, the guards of such facilities must be women. This will lessen the risk of sexual abuse and harassment for the inmates. For pregnant women, proper care should be provided. In general, women in prisons should be treated as human beings. They should be provided with sufficient access to their necessities. Some may say that prisoners should not be provided special treatment. Some may even suggest that they should be made to suffer the consequences of their actions. However, this is not the point of correctional facilities. Punishment and suffering cannot and will not help inmates improve themselves. Instead of punishing them with a hard life, correctional facilities should focus on giving inmates the chance to realize their mistakes and learn from them. Another important point to make is that most inmates come from impoverished families. Poverty is often the reason why most of them are led to a life of crime. Most of those who are in prison turned to drugs because of poverty. As Ogden (62) wrote, The majority are in prison for economic and drug-related crimes. With such being the case, correctional facilities should focus on providing inmates with vocational and technical training. Such training will equip them with necessary skills that will allow them to move up in the socio-economic ladder. Having such skills will prevent them from turning to crime again since they finally will be given a chance to overcome poverty after they leave the walls of prison. Finally, the criminal justice system should review the law on mandatory minimum sentence. This regulation requires that people committed for certain crimes must receive a prison sentence. This law requires reconsideration because some sentences are unnecessary. These recommendations may not be agreeable with some people. However, when considering the problems that the women in correctional facilities face, these recommendations will greatly alleviate their suffering with the criminal justice system. Metre, Meter, and Mete Metre, Meter, and Mete Metre, Meter, and Mete By Maeve Maddox Numerous readers wrote to correct me regarding the following entry in my post about commonly confused words that begin with M: 5. meter / metre Both words are nouns. Aà meterà is a measuring device, like a gas meter.à Metreà is a metric unit or a type of rhythm in verse. American speakers wrote to point out that the standard US spelling for the metric unit is meter, never metre. Speakers from the UK and Canada wrote to tell me that they never have occasion to write meter, only metre. So, how inaccurate is my meter/metre entry? Regarding standard British usage, it is completely accurate. Regarding standard American usage, it fails on two counts: 1. It fails to mention that meter is the standard US spelling for the metric unit. 2. It does not mention the fact that meter has also become acceptable US spelling for the word that refers to the rhythmic structure of a verse. Apologies to my American readers are therefore in order. Meter, it is, for all three meanings. As for devices that measure such things as gas and electricity, the spelling meter is standard in British usage. Both words, metre and meter, have their remote origins in an Indo-European word for measure. The English word metre in the sense of poetic rhythm was already in use during the Old English period. The original Latin word, metrum, could mean ââ¬Å"poetic measureâ⬠or ââ¬Å"a vessel or other object used for measuring.â⬠The word metre in the sense of ââ¬Å"a metric unitâ⬠entered English from French mà ¨tre in 1797, two years after the metric system was formally defined in French law. à The noun meter in the sense of ââ¬Å"a mechanical measuring deviceâ⬠was introduced in the nineteenth century by the inventor of a gas meter. His use of the word had nothing to do with metre in either the sense of poetic rhythm or the metric system. The meter in ââ¬Å"gas meterâ⬠derives from the English verb to mete (ââ¬Å"to measureâ⬠), a verb that has existed in English since Old English times. Before the inventor used meter in the context of his mechanism, the occupational term meter existed for a person whose job was to measure things. The verb mete survives in current usage with the meanings ââ¬Å"to apportionâ⬠or ââ¬Å"to deal out.â⬠It is usually used with the particle out. Here are examples of recent usage: Pfeffer says powerful people do certain things to advance their own agendas. One of these is to mete out resources. The criticismà meted outà by the press is always the first thing that people hear. à The Government is planning to bolster her impact by granting her the ability to mete out financial penalties. A new way to mete out discipline in schools? Kurds Likely to Mete Out Severe Justice The following use of mete in the King James translation of the Bible may be the reason that the verb is often associated with justice and punishment: For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.- Matthew 7:2. Bottom line American usage recognizes the spelling meter for the metric unit, the rhythmic structure, and the measuring apparatus. British usage recognizes two spellings: metre for verse and metric units; meter for an apparatus that automatically measures the quantity of something passing through it.
